An Anglo-Russian mother, adventurer, author and TV presenter, I graduated from the University of Edinburgh with a degree in Russian language and literature. In 1999 I set out to become the first people since the time of Marco Polo to ride 5,000 miles of the Silk Road on horse and camel. This journey triggered a passion for travel and adventure and I went on to spend six months riding horses through Mongolia and Eastern Siberia, as well as retracing a legendary Soviet expedition of Turkmen riders on Akhal Teke horses all the way from Ashgabad to Moscow’s Red Square.
I was commissioned to write an account of the Silk Road expedition by Profile Books, ‘The Last Secrets of the Silk Road’ in 2003. I have also written extensively for magazines and newspapers on my various travels, and in 2009 presented a series of documentaries, ‘Horse People with Alexandra Tolstoy’, for BBC2.
In 2020 I established The Tolstoy Edit as a space to curate my favourite fashion and interiors discoveries. My style has been influenced by my travels and heritage, inspiring me to look for independent brands that embrace individuality, traditions and craftsmanship. In an age where mass consumerism is no longer desirable and fashion has become less trend driven, it gives me great happiness to be able to share my finds.
