A museum worthy folk painted marriage coffer from the land of the Szekler, in the region of the city of Brasov, in Eastern Transylvania, it is either a Szekler piece or Csango (these are two Magyar or Hungarian ethic groups who inhabit this region), it is dated to 1843, and very good original condition, the flower painting to the exterior and the ‘three tree’ motif to the interior is all traditional and symbolic harking back to pre-Christian beliefs in fertility, femininity and cosmology.
