Antique Marriage Bench With Folk Art Decoration
An antique box bench lavishly decorated with flowers on a blue ground colour, a late 19th century pine and box bench, probably painted again, as was customary, in the early 20th century when the piece would be given to a newly married couple. This folk practice was typical of the Kaloteszeg, a group of villages in Central Eastern Transylvania, where the women folk wore Sunday best costume with the same highly decorative floral embroidery as is found on their dowry furniture.
