Hard to value such a rare piece, a West Country architectural style pine dresser in original paint which, as the plaque inside the cupboard relates, has been “made up from the remains of a very ancient dresser” that was in the cottage where William of Orange held his first parliament soon after landing at Brixham in 1688 (he had been called upon by Protestant interests to seize the throne to prevent a Catholic Succession) the motto surrounding the inscription praising William the 3rd who “saved us from popery, brass money & wooden shoes” is the traditional toast of the Orange Order, suggesting this dresser may have come from an Orangemans' Lodge & not necessarily in Ireland as this secret society had meeting houses in England and Scotland too. Curiously too it is a portable piece or at least potentially so as it breaks down into parts, plinth, base, uprights & top piece, with shelves for plates.

West Country c.1680 and later
