Folk Painted Marriage Trunk Or Chest
A painted pine marriage chest or box with delightful folk painted detail on all 4 sides. This piece comes from the Kaloteszeg, a small area inhabited by Hungarian ethnic peoples east of Central Transylvania, it was and is an area famed for it’s textile art, folk costume and painted dowry furniture. The painting on the box here was strictly tradition bound and it tied the married couple into the tribe whilst also sending out cosmic messages of love & bounty, the costumes and textiles, pillows, sheets & coverlets, made for the newly weds house and their clean room would consist of the same patterns in the same colours. Barely used some of this furniture is exceptionally well preserved, like this piece, which is very clean to the interior and is dated “1909”.
Just around the time the area of the Kaloteszeg was gaining fame amongst the intelligentsia of Budapest.
