Rare Folk Carved Window Surround In Original Paint

One of the more remarkable and little known branches of wider European folk craft is the tradition of adorning country houses in Russia with spectacular and decorative window surrounds, this is a particularly good one owing to the deep relief and applied carving, it is bold in it’s expression with a typical mix of traditional Western decorative classical ornament allied to indigenous and more exotic motifs.
It has been carefully restored and retains dry original weathered paint. We have built a frame to the reverse giving stability and also acting as a rebate so that if a mirror plate could be applied if desired.
