Renaissance Style Marriage Box In Original Paint
A rare survivor, a 17th century pine marriage box, from Bavaria, this type with panelled arcaded fronted chest in Renaissance style were made from the mid-16th to the end of the 18th century in this region including the Tyrol and Switzerland. It would have been owned by a wealthy peasant family but one who would customarily have a painted box rather than a hardwood one with inlaid decoration as that was the custom and would have cost less. You can see here the original decoration is almost faded away but creating a nice warm effect of age and patina. In keeping with much early pine in these areas the painted decoration is red and black on bare wood, or on bare wood with wash of chalky white. Invariably pieces have been touched in or completely re-painted. When untouched they are almost devoid of the original decoration not surprisingly. This one has had restoration to plinth.
