Transylvanian Reverse Glass Painting
A reverse glass painting from Transylvania, it's been said before how present day Romania is situated culturally & aesthetically as well as geographically in between east & west, half way to India, the innate artistic thinking of the people closer to that of the carpet maker than the illusionism of the classical tradition, these popular works for example (their version of Staffordshire mantelpiece figures) are copied from skillfully executed lithographic prints, religious works produced by German print houses & intended to furnish the sober interiors of the middle & ruling urban classes, what the village artist does is subversive & appropriative, in a natural & not politically conscious way, heads of saint are replaced by flowers & the colour is a free untutored expression.
